Study Tips and Online Resources
Students sometimes find they need some study tips and help studying. More than any other skill, being able to memorize lists of words and verb forms is an important part of learning the language. Since at first the words and phrases can easily be mispronounced, it's better at first to have someone say the words for you (or listen to them using our textbook's resources) than you saying them on your own (and not being sure of what you are saying). Some of the best study tips are here:

Students sometimes find they need some study tips and help studying. More than any other skill, being able to memorize lists of words and verb forms is an important part of learning the language. Since at first the words and phrases can easily be mispronounced, it's better at first to have someone say the words for you (or listen to them using our textbook's resources) than you saying them on your own (and not being sure of what you are saying). Some of the best study tips are here:
- Practice every day. Small bits of time (even twenty minutes) over time will pay off much more than trying to cram the night before.
- When you study, change the way you use the language. One day, practice writing the word or phrase. Then, practice saying it. Work with a friend or partner saying the words and phrases out loud. The trick is to not get bored (so you keep studying). Making your own set of flashcards, for example, can involve writing the words, reading the words, saying the words, and if you work with a partner, getting a friend to say them with you.
- Use a calendar, day planner, or an app on your phone to keep yourself organized. Write down the dates of upcoming tests and quizzes. Then, allocate enough time in the days ahead of time, so that you know the information.
- Know where to look for help. Resources can be found in your texts, online, or be people you may know. Know where to find the vocabulary list in your textbook, and use it. Ask a classmate to be a study partner, and periodically review together. Use a verb book, verb wheel, or an application to look up verb conjugations as quickly as possible.
- Use the language. Have fun. For example, find how many items you can name in Spanish or how many phrases you can practice. Challenge yourself, as you are learning, to spend some time each day outside of class thinking in the language.
- Feel like you are still over your head or are not getting the grade you want? Work with a peer tutor. Peer tutors are Spanish students in upper level Spanish courses who volunteer their time to review and teach material that was missed or not understood with first and second year students. If you've been absent or just need someone to study with you, see me or Mrs. Emerson in order to sign up with a peer tutor. You can meet once or weekly.
- Use sites such as Quizlet and StudySpanish.com to help you practice.
